Inhabiting Joy: A Mindful Body Practice
Joy is not something that you have to seek outside of yourself. Joy is available to you when you remember to step into it with intention, awareness, and the trust that you have all that is required to embody it.
I invite you to explore the following practice as a way of connecting with the joy that already lives within your body.
1. Whether you’re sitting or standing, with your feet firmly planted on the floor or ground and your chin parallel to the ground, uplift your spine as if a string were gently pulling you up from the crown point of your head.
2. While maintaining this physical sense of being uplifted, relax your body, particularly your face, chest, shoulders, belly, and back. Connecting to a sense of softness through the musculature can support you in this process.
3. Allow your lower body—from the waist downward—to feel heavy and rooted, and at the same time, allow your upper body to feel soft, light, and buoyant.
4. Breathe through your nose in a naturally slow, calm, deep, and quiet way, without forcing the breath.
5. Pay attention to your body and breath, remembering to return your awareness to your uplifted, relaxed body and calm breath throughout this practice.
6. Maintain a slight smile on your face while imagining the energy of that smile radiating throughout your body. Then let it rise from the soles of your feet through your legs, belly, and heart, up to the top of your head, and finally shine out through your eyes into the world in a way that connects you to all of humanity.
7. Raise your arms upward in a posture celebrating the joy that is always available to you when you accept the way things are, right now.
Practice Mindfulness of Joy in Everyday Life
After you connect with joy within your body, practice taking it to the people and situations that matter most in your life. Notice what happens when you think, speak, and act in relation to others while you’re connected to joy.
Joy Includes Everything and Everyone
Embodying joy is not about pushing away other emotions. Joy makes room for the entire range of your experiences—including sadness—and also allows you to celebrate the happiness of others without envy or jealousy. Attitudes of acceptance, kindness, gratitude, and generosity allow you to limitlessly expand the resonance of joy from body, mind, and heart to ultimately include the entire world.
